If you don't already have a marketing campaign figured out, it's time to get those bases covered. And you don't have to be a marketing genius, just follow our ten top tips to get started and see how easy it is to make your business stand out in a crowded marketplace.
- Make a great website. Your business's online presence can be very important for its future, so it's worth doing all you can to make sure you are getting the most out of your website. A good website looks great, is easy to use, is regularly updated and has great content.
- Improve the visibility of your website. The first step is making sure that you have a local business page for all three major search engines. All you will need to do is visit Google, Bing and Yahoo, for example, search for local business listings, and create an account.
- Get on social media. You can find lots of plumbing businesses on social media, attracting followers and building their brand. For example, you can create a Facebook page that will list your website, contact info and list of services. Every so often, you can also add special offers and deals for services as a way of attracting new customers.
- Start blogging. Publish useful free information and tips on relevant home maintenance topics on your website and share with your customers via email, text and social media. People will appreciate your expertise and knowledge and word is bound to spread about your service.
- Learn about Search Engine Marketing (SEM). The small paid ads you see on the results pages of search engines when you search for products and services can be great for generating sales leads and it may be the best solution to quickly attract new business.
- Encourage Customers to Leave Reviews and Testimonials. If you have done a fantastic job, it's easy to ask your customers to leave testimonials or reviews of your service on your social media accounts. This way, when people check out your website or the associated social media accounts and see all these positive reviews and testimonials it will encourage them to hire your service immediately.
- Don't forget about traditional marketing. There are many different ways customers get their information over the course of a day, including online, mobile search, TV and radio. But don't forget or underestimate traditional marketing such as memorable signage on your place of business and vehicle, advertising in the local paper or even sponsoring the local junior football team.
- Collect contact details. Keeping in touch with customers is one of the easiest ways to keep them coming back to use your services. Collecting contact details including email address and mobile phone number for every customer is standard practice, but often this valuable data goes unused. A simple text reminder to keep his or her boiler serviced could motivate someone to seek out your service.
- Consider a simple email campaign. Email is one of the most powerful and personal ways to connect with your customers - actually it is still one of the best ways to find new customers, make more sales or create a band of loyal followers. Think about sending out a quarterly newsletter listing your services and prices and useful articles about home maintenance.
- Create a network. Consider joining your local chamber of commerce, small business club or even neighbourhood watch scheme and community centre. Getting involved in local charities, sports clubs and volunteer services can be a great way to get word of your business to local customers.
