The driver shortage is arguably the biggest issue facing the road haulage industry, with chancellor George Osborne under pressure to announce support for driver training in the Budget this week.
The Freight Transport Association claims more than 20,000 drivers have quit since September last year, but the shortage could be as high as 45,000, with demand far exceeding supply.
A key factor has been the introduction of the new Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, which means drivers have to complete an extra 35 hours training, costing some ??500. But many argue that the road haulage industry has been slow to replace an ageing workforce with new blood.
Whichever way you look at it, finding and retaining qualified drivers is even more of a priority for the industry and fleet managers must find new ways to find drivers and keep them committed to the organisation.
