Research conducted recently by What Car? has revealed the gaping void between manufacturers MPG claims and the "real world" fuel economy values shown by their "True MPG" programme.
Currently "urban", "extra-urban" and "combined" fuel figures are obtained from a series of tests known as the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). While the tests are supposed to represent a vehicle's typical usage, the reality is they are far from it - conducted in a laboratory, free from traffic and environmental factors and with all fuel-sapping electrical equipment switched off. This fundamental flaw in the test means even the most diligent of driver will find it all but impossible to match the manufacturer's figures.
Of course, this likely won't be news to most Fleet Managers; you know only too well that the reality of your drivers' jobs often makes managing fuel economy a challenge. But, to maximise your business' profits and minimise your carbon emissions, reducing fuel consumption is essential ??? the key to which is something that's easier said than done: modifying driver behaviour.
So it's over to you, with hectic work schedules and challenging road conditions how do you ensure your vehicles are driven efficiently? Please leave your advice in the comments section below.
