Much progress in fleet safety has been made in the past decade. Legislation banning hand-held mobile phones at the wheel, the spread of fixed speed cameras, major developments in safe vehicle design, our first 20 mph towns and cities and widespread government media campaigns to persuade people to drive more safely has resulted in the number of deaths on the road dropping to the lowest level for almost 90 years.
The development and introduction of corporate manslaughter legislation in 2007 has also helped to drive company resources into managing road risk, but we must remind ourselves that still every day there are more than 150 vehicles driven on company business that crash. Every year there are around 10,000 serious injuries resulting from road collisions involving someone making a work-related journey, including around 1,000 road deaths.
Driving is probably the highest risk activity that any employee will undertake on behalf of their organisation and employers have a formal duty of care for workers using vans or trucks on company business. The consequences of being unprotected are severe and include fines of up to 10% of annual turnover, serious long-term damage to a company's reputation and prosecution for the individuals concerned.
