How to apply for the apply for the DVS extended grace period?

If you think you will need more time to install the new safety measures required as part of the Progressive Safe System, Transport for London (TfL) has the option to apply to receive a grace period for specific vehicles. If your application is successful, you will have additional time to install the Progressive Safe System and obtain an HGV safety permit.

How long does the grace period last?

It will run from 6 months starting on the 28th of October 2024 to the 4th May 2025, ending at 23.59.

How do I apply for the grace period?

The most important note is, receiving the grace period is not automatic, you must apply for it.

If you haven’t already got one, first you must set up a London Road User Charging account. Then sign in to your account and follow the instructions on the DVS enquiry form.

What do I need to apply?

You will need to provide two pieces of information:

  1. The vehicle registration mark (number plate)
  2. Proof that you have arranged the installation of your PSS between the 28th October 2024 and 4th May 2025

Acceptable forms of evidence can include:

  • Written confirmation from your provider
  • Appointment bookings
  • Or other forms of correspondence you have an installation arranged or have purchased equipment that can only arrive after the 28th October 2024.

Anything else I need to know?

If you have multiple vehicles, you will need to apply separately for each vehicle.

Your vehicle must also have an active zero, one or two star safety permit to be qualified for the grace period. You can check your star rating here.
